History
The first Wisconsin/Northern Michigan District camp meeting was held in 1934 at Camp Byron in Byron, Wisconsin. These rented facilities registered the presence of God for the many years that they served our District. In 1944 a 200-acre farm located five miles south of Waupaca on County Trunk E was purchased. This property, situated on a beautiful 52-acre spring-fed lake, became known as Spencer Lake Bible Camp.
Construction during those war days was difficult. Various means of securing buildings and materials were used. A saw and planeing mill at Hawkens, Wisconsin, was torn down and hauled to Spencer Lake Bible Camp, thus furnishing material for the dining hall and other buildings. Several vacated barracks at an army camp at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, were dismantled and reassembled at the Bible camp, providing for the early housing.
The first meeting at the new camp was held in 1946. This launched the beginning of many exciting years of development and growth for SlBC. Since then, this camp has welcomed many thousands of adults, youth and children for times of spiritual renewal, fellowship, recreation, and relaxation.
From these humble beginnings, Spencer Lake Bible Camp has advanced with the construction of many new buildings, additions, and improvements to the grounds and recreational facilities. The camp has blossomed into the functional, modern, attractive facility you see today. Spencer Lake Bible Camp is truly a camp of the Assemblies of God people. Over the years they have poured a tremendous amount of sacrifice in the way of volunteer labor, money, and their very hearts into the camp. For many, Spencer Lake is like a second home.
Over the past few years, Spencer Lake Bible Camp has made several improvements, which include: new buildings, landscaping, sidewalks and the remodeling of our older buildings. In 1998 the name of the camp was changed to Spencer Lake Christian Center because of the growing variety of services that our facility will provide to future generations of campers and retreat guests.
